Short description of internship:
This school is for learners with physical disabilities and they represent 24 disability groups eg. Spina Bifida, Spinal Cord Lesions, Muscular Dystrophies, Congenital and Traumatic amputations, Arthritis and Cerebral Palsy. Consideration is given to learners ability to cope in a mainstream setting and their need for the therapeutic services. The school is proactive about mainstreaming and learners are placed back in the mainstream once their rehabilitation has been completed. They offer sports codes such as track and field, wheelchair basketball, table tennis, swimming and hockey. Wheelchair dancing is a comparatively new activity in the school and ideas for new activities and interests are always gladly accepted.
Internship tasks:
- Psychometric and scholastic evaluation of students
- Individual counseling, many students come from disadvantaged backgrounds and have accompanying problems that need to be treated.
- Ensuring students mental well-being and help them to work towards self-actualisation.
Although your days at the school may be long and exhausting, your reward will far exceed the effort. Applicant requirements:
Studying towards a degree Psychology
- Some past experience would be preferable in your field
- Good communication skills
- A love of children and a passion to make a difference in their lives.
- An empathy to other individuals
