Windsurfing The typical windsurfing day usually starts in the morning at Sunset Beach in the Table Bay, five minutes away from Makai Lodge. There you sometimes can start windsurfing at about 8.00 o´clock with a 5,0 sail. The wind comes portack in the whole Table Bay. Waves usually arfe between one and tow meters high but there are big days from time to time with mast high sets. The waves are pretty powerful and breaks on sand as a beach break. Even unexperienced wavesailors will have a chance if the waves are small. Sunset Beach is predestinated for waveriding. It´s not such a long waves but you can make powerful cutbacks and big aerials as the wind comes side off shore. Often it is good for jumping as well. Around 11.00 o´clock you can come back to the lodge for having a big breakfast as the wind sometimes dies in that time of the day just before it starts to get really wind at around one or two o´clock. In the afternoon Sunset Beach is not the first choice as the wind often gets so windy that you will have to use really smalls sails in the waves. |
![]() Then first choice for wave jumping addicts is Big Bay, 6-7 minutes from the lodge. Here the wind comes a tiny bit onshore and you will find perfect ramps for all kind of jumps. The wind is not so strong as at Sunset Beach and 4,5 sail is the common sail size. For non - windsurfers there is a small caffee, grassy area in the wind shadow and lots of things to see as the beach is a hang out place for South Africans as well. If Big Bay is too crowded you drive 10 minutes further north where you will find Melkbos Beach. Here the wind is stronger again and 4,0 and 4,5 sails are big enough in the side shore wind. This spot is great for waveriding and for jumping as the wind is not gusty and the waves are better than at Big Bay. The wind usually doesn´t stop before it gets dark, so you can have some sunset sessions at Melkbos. |
![]() Often there are 3-4 days of wind then there are 1-3 days without wind - perfect for checking out Cape Town and it´s surroundings. But often enogh there are two weeks with wind every day. The waves vary on the named spots above between 1 and 4 meters. Two minutes from the lodge you will find a lake where you can go flatwater freestyling or where beginners can make their first steps. But you have to pay a „Surffee“ to a local Surf Club. |
On some days there is no wind in Table Bay but it´s windy one and a half hours south at the Cape of Good Hope. The waves are much bigger than in Table Bay and you will find three hardcore wavespots: Whitsands, Scarborough and Platboom. Especially Platboom is famous for its perfect wave conditions in cristal clear but cold water. But you should be on the water early or later in the afternoon because around noon the wind often gets so windy that a 4,0 sail is much too big. |
To say something to the cold water in South Africa: the water at the Cape of
Good Hope is codler
then the water in Tabel Bay. In Platboom you need a longsleeve wetsuit some
people even use
booties but you don´t need to.In Table Bay you can use a 3/4mm shortsleeve wetsuit. The water temperature depends on the currents - sometimes the water is around 19°C sometimes much colder. If you have two wetsuits - a long- and shortsleeve around 4mm - you will be fine. Sometimes there is no wind in Table Bay but wind further up north. |
To Langebaan you will drive 45 minutes. There you can freestyle and cruise through the bay. Only on the outside there is a small fun wave. Further up north you will find Elands Bay which is 2 hours away from the Lodge. There is a perfect lefthander wave breaking. Really long waverides in the sideoffshore wind are common. These are the main spots I mentioned. Most of the time you can sail Sunset Beach, Big Bay and Melkbos which are just right around the corner from the Lodge so that you will have a relaxed holiday!“ |
| Kitesurfing |
Kitesurfing booms in Cape Town as well. There are a couple of mobile Kite Schools who rent kites and boards as well. The main kitespot is Dolphin Beach just between Sunset Beach and Big Bay 5 minutes from the Makai Lodge. The wind is a bit more onshore is is really constant. |
Most of the Kitesurfers already hit the water in the morning hours because the wind is still relatively light. In the afternoon the wind picks up and you will need small kites. Especially at Dolphin Beach there are many Pros and advanced kitesurfers but beginners will find perfect conditions as well on the small lakes and lagoons around Cape Town. You can take beginners lessons at Dolphin Beach but 45 minutes away from the lodge you will find Lagebaan which is perfect for learning how to kitesurf. There is no problem between kitesurfers and windsurfers in Cape Town because there are so many beaches with different conditions that it won´t get too crowded. |
| Golfing Rings um Kapstadt befinden sich Weltklasse Golfcourses. Around Cape Town you will find some worldclaas golfcourses. Just next to the Makai Lodge there is the Big Bay Golf Club and the Milnerton Golf Club. Around Cape Town - 30 to 40 minutes away from the lodge - there are a dozen more courses. |
The Milnerton Golf Club is the only Left Course in Cape Town with a beautiful view of Table Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean. You play nine holes „out“ (with the wind) and then nine holes „in“ (against the wind). Only problem is the wind who can make golfing pretty hard here. Prices: Greenfee R250, Electrocard R120, Caddies R60 + tip, leesons R100 for 30 min. Important: tradition is important at the Milnerton Golf Club. Jeans and T-Shirt is forbidden!
