Alles was Sie schon immer über "Braai" in Südafrika wissen wollten

In Südafrika ist das Braai eine Philosophie und Lebensart und kann mit dem deutschen Wort Grillen nur sehr unzureichend beschrieben werden. Freunde von mir, die sich in Südafrika ein Haus gebaut haben, wurden von ihrem Architekten aufgeklärt, dass sie unbedingt einen ordentlichen Braai bauen müssen, weil dem Haus sonst etwas ganz Entscheidendes fehlt. Und gegrillt wird natürlich mit Holz, das zu einer Pyramide aufgeschichtet wird und herunterbrennt, bis auf der Glut gegrillt wird.

Das dauert in der Regel ewig und die Wartezeit wird mit dem ein oder anderen Bierchen oder Glas Wein überbrückt. Am 24. September wird in Südafrika der „Heritage Day“ gefeiert. Offiziell wird an diesem Tag die kulturelle Vielfalt und Toleranz gewürdigt. Inoffiziell ist es der „National Braai Day“, an dem alle südafrikanischen Grillmeister zur absoluten Hochform auflaufen.

Wie man ein Braai organisiert

• The woman buys the food.
• The woman makes the salad, prepares the vegetables and makes desert.

THE MAN PLACES THE MEAT ON THE GRILL.

• The woman goes inside to organise the plates and cutlery.
• The woman comes out to tell the man that the meat is looking great. He thanks her and asks if she will bring another beer while he flips the meat.

THE MAN TAKES THE MEAT OFF THE GRILL AND HANDS IT TO THE WOMAN.

• The woman prepares the plates, salad, bread, utensils, napkins, sauces, and brings them to the table.
• After eating, the woman clears the table and does the dishes.
• Everyone PRAISES the MAN and THANKS HIM for his cooking efforts.
• The man asks the woman how she enjoyed ‘ her night off ‘, and, upon seeing her annoyed reaction, concludes that there’s just no pleasing some women.

Umgangssprache rund ums Braaien

Blitz - Universal SA term for fire lighters of any kind or brand, and a frequently asked question at many a braai: "Did anyone bring any blitz?"

Boerie - abbreviation for 'boerewors'.

Bokdopentjop - Bokdopentjop(Bok-dop-en-tjop) - appropriate for a 'bring and braai' - you may bring your bok (babe), your dop (drinks) and tjop (meat of choice)... :-)

Charcoal - When meat has been braai'ed for too long - usually when the braaier had too much klippies and Coke or when SA scores a trie.

Gedoente - When you invite your father, your brother, you boyfriend, ex and husband to the same braai

Referendum Braai - When everyone around the fire has a different opinion on how to braai. The dispute is solved over a good few beers with everyone having had the chance to add to the poll.
