New Zealander, Chris Kelly, who for three years worked vintages for International Wine Services in South Africa as a "Flying Winemaker" and has considerable international winemaking experience, joined Stellenbosch Vineyards as Head Winemaker during 1998. Chris will oversee the winemaking activities of all four Stellenbosch Vineyards cellars. Stellenbosch Vineyards are delighted with the appointment and consider this part of their long-term strategy to upgrade the quality of their wines, crucial in their aim for greater influence in world wine markets and to become a global player.
Mike Graham, formerly the winemaker at Boschendal, has been appointed winemaker at Welmoed beginning 1999. Mike will form an integral part of the creative winemaking team at Stellenbosch Vineyards where new products will continually be developed for their expanding range. Managing Director, Hermann Böhmer, was very excited by the appointment, saying:
Mikes appointment now completes the triumvirate (winemaker Chris Kelly and Francois de Villiers, one of South Africas renowned viticulturists), that will ultimately guide our wines to great heights.
On 1 June 2000 two new wines were release nalmely, Kumkani Sauvignon Blanc 1999 and Kumkani Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon 1998.
The internationally acclaimed quality management and quality assurance standards accreditation, the ISO 9002, has been awarded to Stellenbosch Vineyards’ three wineries, Welmoed, Helderberg and Eersterivier, and the bottling facility, Stellenbosch Bottling. Stellenbosch Vineyards is the first privately owned South African wine company to receive this certification.
Internationally, particularly in the European Union, ISO 9000 registration has become a specific requirement of many wine retailers and where not, will give Stellenbosch Vineyards a definite competitive advantage, with perceived higher wine quality levels. Internally at Stellenbosch Vineyards, there will be a greater quality awareness and increased efficiency and productivity. ISO 9002 certification is yet another step along the long road of Stellenbosch Vineyards’ stated aim of becoming one of the top companies in the global beverage market.
